gir,

I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter

No.2067/1914 dated 5th May, 1914, conveying the deep sympathi

of His Excellency the Governor and the Government of Hongkong

in the loss of my husband in a piratical attack on the 5.8.

"Tai On", in the China seas on the night of the 27th April,1914.

2.

I was extremely moved to read through your letter

and the extracts attached. The grief and shock have so much up-

set me and undermined my constitution that I am at present

quite unable to work and am confined to my bed, suffering from

nervous breakdown, The doctors, I am informed today, have

decided to perform a serious abdominal operation on Monday the

1st June. Heaven alone can say whether I shall recover from

my present illness or not. In any case, besides myself, I have

a boy to be provided for.

3.

I thank you very much for your kind letter and

ask you to convey to His Excellency the Governor of Hongkong

my sincere thanks for his message of sympathy, and I feel that

with his support the Colonial Government will not allow me to

live penniless in this world. The only means of my support is

the very small pittance of Rs.12/- (Rs.20/- less washing bill

Rs.8/-) a month, I receive as salary on the nursing staff of

this hospital, where I get my board and quarters in addition.

My boy, aged only 13, is at a hill school in India and I am now

quite unable to meet the charges of his education and have no

friends or relations in India or elsewhere who can help me.

I attach a true statement of my case for your

4.

consideration.

5.

I have been obliged to get this letter typed as

I cannot move to write with either pen or pencil.

The Colonial secretary,

Hongkong.
